If I call one the lawyers at Baker Act attorneys can you Baker Act me?

Hello, everyone! It’s Mark, and welcome to another edition of our video newsletter. In this video, I want to talk about whether I, as a lawyer, can Baker Act you.

Ever since COVID came along, we’ve been inundated with calls from people who are calling for help. They have been experiencing anxiety, depression, and loneliness, and it really is tough. This is a tough time for a lot of people, and they’re calling my office telling me, “Hey, will you Baker Act me?” and unfortunately, I cannot Baker Act you. You can only be baker acted either by somebody who’s a qualified professional, like an emergency room doctor or law enforcement, or by somebody going to the court and petitioning for a court order to have you baker-acted.

If you are in crisis and need help, here are three things you can do. Number one, you should call 211 if you’re suicidal because that’s the suicide hotline. Number two, you can call 911 and ask for help. Number three, you can reach out to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, a phenomenal resource if you need help.

These are three things you can reach out to if you need help; 211, 911, or NAMI. If none of these work and you want to call my office, we have a Rolodex of clinicians and other resources that we can help you with. Unfortunately, me baker acting you is not one of the things I can help you with.

With that said, take care, be well, and stay safe.
