This doesn’t happen to people like us

Hello, everyone! Welcome to another edition of our video newsletter.

I want to share a recent conversation with a family in this video. I got a call from the parents, and they told me that they don’t understand because their loved one has a substance use disorder, and this doesn’t happen to people like them. It made me pause for a second and contemplate what they just said.

This is not the first time I’ve heard this sort of statement. Perhaps the reference was their financial situation, religious background, or ethnic background. I didn’t indulge them in a conversation about it because, frankly, it didn’t matter. I want to share with you based on my experience of handling hundreds of cases where substance use and mental illness over the years do not discriminate. It doesn’t care how much money you have; it doesn’t care about the color of your skin, your religious practices, how often you go to the temple, or your sexual preference. For some people, that’s a hard pill to swallow, but that’s the truth. So, if your loved one has a substance use or mental disorder, stop trying to rationalize it. It happens to all kinds of people, so please call us for a free consultation, and let’s talk about how we can get your loved ones into treatment and save them.

With that said, stay safe and be well.
